Our next film showing on the Wednesday, 20th November is ‘Lost in Translation’, a 2003 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Sofia Coppola.
Synopsis: Bob Harris is an American film actor, far past his prime. He visits Tokyo to appear in commercials, and he meets Charlotte, the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored and weary, Bob and Charlotte make ideal if improbable traveling companions. Charlotte is looking for “her place in life,” and Bob is tolerating a mediocre stateside marriage. Both separately and together, they live the experience of the American in Tokyo. Bob and Charlotte suffer both confusion and hilarity due to the cultural and language differences between themselves and the Japanese. As the relationship between Bob and Charlotte deepens, they come to the realization that their visits to Japan, and one another, must soon end. Or must they?
Come along to pre-film social gathering, taking place at Bridge in Student Union Building 42 from 18.00. This is an ideal opportunity to get together and chat over drinks. We will encourage speaking in Japanese for those who wishes to practice Japanese and for those who simply miss talking in Japanese!
There will be a mini-Japanese library (a selection of DVDs and books) during the social gathering. You can apply for a membership during the gathering, if you haven’t got your membership card yet.
